Non-Invasive Deep Brain Stimulation of the Hippocampus
18 December 2023 | Gyrus Group
A new study has demonstrated, for the first time, that non-invasive deep brain stimulation – known as Temporal Interference (TI) – is safe and tolerable in healthy human adults, building on work previously only conducted in rodents. Violante et al. report that TI can control hippocampal activity and can improve accuracy of episodic memory (autobiographical memory). Having validated this work in healthy adults, the next stage is to test whether memory improvements can be demonstrated in people in the earliest stages of Alzheimer’s Disease. Experts are hailing this work as an “astonishing step forward” and argue that the demonstrated safety of this technology could be a “game-changer” in treating neurological and psychiatric conditions.
