Underdiagnosis of Young-Onset Dementia in England

NHS England have released previously unrecorded figures on the number of people living with Young-Onset Dementia (YOD), confirming that 34,124 people have a diagnosis of YOD in England. However, the Alzheimer’s Society, in collaboration with other dementia charities, fear this figure is missing approximately 19,194 people living with YOD but who have not received a diagnosis or support, making the total number likely closer to 53,606. Younger adults who develop dementia may not initially experience memory loss, and the behavioural, language, and personality symptoms that are more common in YOD may be mistakenly attributed to other causes, such as stress.
